Your Password Reset May Have Worked. Your Browser May Still Be Using the Old Password

A failed login after changing a password does not always mean the reset failed. A browser may autofill an older saved password before you select Log In.

The Problem

The new password may never reach the login form

You reset a password successfully, return to the login page, and see that the password field is already filled. You select Log In and receive another error.

The natural conclusion is that the reset failed. However, the browser may have replaced or covered the new password with an older saved credential. The account accepted the reset, but the login form submitted something different.

Listen

Pay attention to what happens after the reset

Before resetting the password again, review what you actually see:

  • Was the password field already filled when the login page opened?
  • Did the browser or a password manager display more than one saved login?
  • Are you using a different browser, browser profile, computer, or mobile device?
  • Could synchronized browser data still contain an older password?
  • Did you manually enter the new password, or did autofill complete the field?

Do not assume your browser has nothing saved

This is worth checking whether you use a password manager, save credentials offline, or rely on the browser. A saved login may have been created previously, imported, or synchronized from another device. The reliable way to know what the browser holds is to inspect it.
